Thanksgiving online shopping off to strong start

Early US data suggest day’s sales via ecommerce will hit $2bn for first time

The battle for Thanksgiving online shoppers is well under way, with early data suggesting that it is off to a positive start.

Between midnight and 5pm US Eastern Time, online sales increased 13.6 per cent to $1.15bn, compared with 2015, according to Adobe Digital Index, which tracks 80 per cent of online sales of the top 100 retailers. It said this figure meant sales via ecommerce for the day before the Black Friday shopping bonanza should come close to its estimated $2bn — a record.
However, it added that heavy discounting compared with last year, particularly for televisions, toys and petcare items had “slowed revenue growth”, while a record $449m orders were sent from mobile devices, nearly 60 per cent higher than last year.
Traditional retailers from Target to Macy’s have opened their doors to shoppers keen to venture outside to bag bargains on televisions, toys and clothes. Walmart is open all day as usual.
Thanksgiving weekend through to Cyber Monday is crucial for retailers across the country, both in-store and online. It is the busiest commerce period of the year, even though consumers are increasingly stretching their gift shopping over the whole of November and December.
Investors will be keenly watching how Walmart, which has been investing heavily in ecommerce, fares online against arch rival and internet leader Amazon.
“We are bullish on Amazon as we think they are the retailer best positioned to capture outsized market share in the 2016 holiday season,” wrote Morgan Stanley analysts in a note to investors.
“As with any retailer, traffic matters, and Amazon has added more new mobile app users than any other retailer over the past 12 months, and now has 2.7 times more mobile app users than the nearest retailer.”
Amazon will need to ensure it is converting those app visitors into buyers. Even though mobile will probably overtake desktop in visits this holiday season, sales on mobile devices are not as high, Adobe predicts.
When it comes to the share of shoppers, Conlumino, a retail information specialist, estimates that Amazon will gain 11.3 percentage points to 59.6 per cent of those hitting the web or stores this holiday season. Walmart remains in the lead with 69.8 per cent, though the gap is closing.
Walmart has made ecommerce a clear focus this year. The world’s largest retailer by sales has doubled the amount of products it offers online this year to 23m, compared with the holiday season last year, as well as starting online offers earlier. In line with this larger assortment, it now has 10 “mega” fulfilment centres to handle online orders compared with five last year.
It has made several improvements to its website, using technology and big data to make gift suggestions to visitors and has improved the speed that pages load on its website by one-third.
Both in-store and online it has made clear that it will be competing on price. Analysts at Jefferies estimate that Walmart has increased its level of discounting the most this year, raising it 4 per cent year-on-year, with some of the biggest discounts on televisions and toys.
Walmart is estimated to have increased its level of discounting the most this year among US retailers © Bloomberg
“Overall, it seems that Walmart is making larger Black Friday investment this year,” Jefferies said, adding that the retailer is its “favourite name” for the season. “With recent price checks suggesting that Walmart may have eased up on price investment since the summer, our analysis suggests that Walmart will be more active on price for the holidays.”
The National Federation of Retailers is predicting a slight rise in the number of shoppers hitting stores, websites and apps over the long weekend to 59 per cent, or 137.4m Americans, from 58.7 per cent last year. Its survey estimated that 55.7 per cent of shoppers have already started gift shopping.
In downtown Chicago, by late afternoon queues were forming outside Macy’s and Target, though one shopper remarked that it did not feel as busy as last year.
Dolly Stackhouse, who was queuing to buy some winter boots on sale in Macy’s, highlighted how shoppers are shifting online but there are certain items that just need to be bought in-store.
”I normally shop online, but with boots I wanted to see how they looked and felt. I also wanted to get outside for some air,” she said. She said that she did not feel that the economy had either improved or deteriorated since last year, but that she would be spending less as there were fewer people for her to buy for this year.
While Black Friday remains a crucial shopping day, Conlumino figures highlight how its importance is waning as shopping spreads across a longer period. It expects a 1.9 per cent increase in sales on the day, the second slowest rise in seven years.
For the whole holiday period of November and December, the NRF expects a 3.6 per cent rise in sales to $665.9bn.
Whether these gains occur depends not only on how attractive the discounts are, but also weather forecasts for the coming weeks, and whether consumer sentiment has been affected by the recent presidential election.
Jason Lee, queuing outside Target to upgrade his iPhone as the company was offering $250 in-store purchases along with it, said that he was not confident about the economic outlook in the US with Donald Trump in charge.
“He doesn’t have any experience,” Mr Lee said. “This doesn’t mean that I’ll spend less, but I’m going to be mindful about what I spend on.”
While the weather has been unseasonably warm in the lead-up to the holiday season, Morgan Stanley notes that forecasts for a colder winter this year compared with last could help sales.

US - Thanksgiving sales surge online as shoppers stay home for holiday

At the start of the first holiday shopping season since the election of Donald Trump as president on Nov. 8, US consumers loosened their purse strings and spent $1.15 billion online between midnight and 5 pm ET on Thursday.

Online spending by US bargain hunters climbed to above $1 billion by Thanksgiving evening, according to Adobe Digital Index, surging almost 14 percent from a year ago and reflecting a broader trend away from brick-and-mortar shopping. At the start of the first holiday shopping season since the election of Donald Trump as president on Nov. 8, US consumers loosened their purse strings and spent $1.15 billion online between midnight and 5 pm ET on Thursday, according to Adobe.
Watch What Else Is Making News

Traditionally the day after Thanksgiving, or Black Friday, has started the holiday shopping season in the United States with retailers offering steep discounts and turning a profit. But its popularity has been on the wane given the emergence of online shopping and cheap deals through the year from retailers including e-commerce giant Amazon.com Inc.
US stores are now opening on Thanksgiving to try and boost in-store sales, while retailers have been offering online deals weeks in advance to cope with lower demand and stiff pricing competition.
“We saw one of our strongest days ever online,” Brian Cornell, chief executive of discount retailer Target, told reporters on Thursday evening. He added that online sales grew by double digits, without giving further details.
The holiday season spanning November and December is crucial for retailers because it can account for as much as 40 percent of annual sales. Retailers try to attract shoppers with deep discounts, sometimes as much as 85 percent.
The National Retail Federation, which has been bullish with projections in the past, expects holiday sales to grow 3.6 percent this year to $655.8 billion.
“Online discounts are earlier and a lot bigger than last year,” said Tamara Gaffney, principal research analyst at Adobe Digital Index.
The Adobe figure is collected from 21 billion online visits to 4,500 U.S. retail sites since Nov. 1.
“Black Friday is no longer a one-day event; it has turned into a multi-week event,” said Christopher Baldwin, chief executive officer at BJ’s Wholesale Club Inc, which operates club stores on the East Coast that compete with Wal-Mart Stores Inc’s Sam’s Club.
Store traffic remained subdued across the country, according to spot checks made by Reuters reporters and industry officials.
“Initial reports show it’s steady and not very busy at stores around the country,” said Craig Johnson, president at retail consultancy Customer Growth Partners. The firm deployed 18 people nationwide to observe customer traffic.
Rain hurt shopping at stores in the Northeast, Johnson said, but some retailers like Best Buy and Wal-Mart saw improved customer traffic at stores across the country.
At a JC Penney store in Manhattan, Terry Bodiford, visiting from South Carolina, said he did not feel deals were better than he had found online over the past few weeks.
Macy’s and Best Buy on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile were packed, but employees said most of the customers were tourists.
Chicago’s State Street, a normally bustling shopping area popular with locals, was desolate.
Shaun Smith, a 29-year-old restaurant manager, said he only came to the State Street store to take advantage of a deal for a $279 Westinghouse TV which is normally priced over $600
“I will buy most of what I need online,” he said.

Mobile phone purchases to see temporary fall due to cash crunch

NEW DELHI: Handset makers expect demand for mobile phones to dip over the next few days as consumers prioritize their purchases amid a liquidity crunch caused by Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes going out of circulation.

While the dip in demand is expected to be short term, the impact would be seen more in non-urban areas or mom-n-pop stores where cash is the primary mode of transaction, retailers and sector analysts said.

“Consumers may delay their purchase of phones for the next 4-6 days as they may want to conserve cash for basic necessities,” said Lava International’s head of product Gaurav Nigam.

“But things will normalise once the ATMs start working again, so the overall impact will be marginal to negligible,” he added.

Indians were left with few options for purchasing all kinds of products including those of daily use on Wednesday, after the government banned use of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes from midnight of November 8, Tuesday. While currency of Rs 100 and lower is being allowed for transactions, users having notes of higher value would have to deposit them back to their accounts through banks or post offices. Against the deposits, withdrawals of up to Rs 10,000 a day or Rs 20,000 a week will be allowed.

"Demand across phones will dip for two weeks or so, as people who were thinking of buying phones will put the decisions on the back burner,” said Vishal Tripathi, research director, Gartner India.

"Cyclically November-December are lean months for mobile phone sales post the festive season, but due to the liquidity crunch purchases of smartphones or featurephones could be put off for a few days,” Navkendar Singh, senior research manager at IDC India added.

Also, retailers who transact mostly in cash would be averse to cash-based transactions due to the uncertainty in the market, analysts added.

All India Mobile Retailers Association said that while urban users may not completely clamp down their purchases as majority have credit or debit cards for buying phones, while options of buying through equal monthly installments is also present.

“The stores in non-urban areas, or say rural areas, where consumers make purchases using cash, would feel the most impact in demand.”

The government has closed banks for November 9 and cash dispensing ATMs for November 9 and 10, while withdrawals will be limited till November 11 to Rs 2,000. Notes currently in use can be traded for up to Rs 4,000 till November 24, and for larger amounts thereafter.

The sudden late-night developments ?on Tuesday ?were aimed at fighting unaccounted cash or black money in the system, the government said, but left consumers in the cold who would now have to conserve low value cash to buy goods of daily need. The decisions would impact higher value purchases across sectors, including electronics and mobile phones.

People will get new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes, cleared by the Reserve Bank of India, from November 10.

Chinese company admits to planting spyware in mobile phones

Kryptowire found spyware hidden in the firmware of some of the examined phones manufactured by Shanghai Adups Technology

A Chinese company has admitted that it planted a spyware in some Android mobile phones that sent back to China information about the users and text messages.

The admission came after the programme was exposed by a US cyber security firm.

Although the company, Shanghai Adups Technology, asserted that the "text messages, contacts or phone logs" it collected were not shared with anyone else, it has raised security and privacy concerns about the use of spyware and the potential for the information collected to fall into the hands of the government or others. Several mobile phone brands are manufactured in China.

Kryptowire exposed the spyware on Tuesday, saying that it had found it hidden in the firmware that came installed by the manufacturer on some phones it had examined.

It said that the programme transmitted the information it collected from mobile phones to computers in Shanghai.

Firmware is the programme that comes pre-installed and controls actions like updating the operating system or other programmes.

"The firmware that shipped with the mobile devices and subsequent updates allowed for the remote installation of applications without the users' consent," Kryptowire said.

It dodged anti-virus software because it was assumed that programmes shipped pre-installed on phones and considered integral to them were clean, it added.

Kryptowire identified Blu brand's R1 HD phone as one of the models infected with the programme.

The model has apparently been sold in India because price monitoring web sites like Mobilewithprices and Phoneradar have posted local prices for it.

Amazon's Indian web site sells accessories for the model, although the phone itself is not listed. The US parent of Amazon has stopped selling it.

The manufacturer of Blu said on its web site that it has "identified and has quickly removed a recent security issue caused by a third party application which had been collecting unauthorized personal data in the form of text messages, call logs, and contacts from customers.

"The firmware on its phones was automatically updated to remove it and verified to be no longer collecting or sending this information," Blu said.

In addition to R1 HD, Blu said the affected models were Energy X Plus 2, Studio Touch, Advance 4.0 L2, Neo XL and Energy Diamond.

The programme is of the category known as firmware over the air, which come pre-installed in computers and are meant, among other things, to keep the phones automatically updated.

Adplus, which claims to have over 700 million active users in more than 200 countries or regions, said that the programme to collect and send the information was "inadvertently" included in the firmware.

The company said it had come up with the programme to help "screen out junk texts and calls from advertisers" by analysing the information collected about them from phones "in order to improve mobile phone experience."

Effect Of Demonetisation On Online Shopping Traffic

On the night of November 8, 2016, something unusual happened. Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi perhaps announced the most significant economical change during the lifetime of most Indians. 86% of our country’s currency notes would cease to be legal tender in just 4 hours. That’s a very short notice and it has since had tremendous impact on trade & consumer demand. Streets are relatively empty and people are lining up to exchange/deposit currency outside banks and ATMs. Enough discussion and debate is already happening on these topics, so I wil spare you that. However there are some interesting data points that we are seeing at Pricebaba. Sharing some of those.

Loss of COD
To begin with, it’s difficult for the ecommerce industry that runs primarily on COD. There is panic, lots of cancelled orders and volumes have gone down significantly. We at Pricebaba are seeing a good 30% drop in organic traffic to our site which we believe would be the same for marketplaces too. May be even more for some of them.

While we initially panicked thinking something went horribly wrong, here is a graph that shows a story, the night of November 8.

While we initially panicked thinking something went horribly wrong, here is a graph that shows a story, the night of November 8.
pricebaba-traffic-8th-nov-1024x220
There was a 26.40% drop in user sessions between 8PM and 9PM alone. That was instant.
While city-level data on Google Analytics isn’t always the most accurate, here is the drop across some top cities comparing November 6,7 to November 9-10:
Mumbai – 29.2%
New Delhi – 37.7%
Ahmedabad – 28%
Bengaluru – 25.6%
Kolkata – 26.6%

This has a good impact on the number of people clicking through and going to ecommerce sites. Let’s look at the trends via our Clevertap panel:
1-7th-nov-affiliate-clicks-1024x408
Clicks to top ecommerce sites by time (November 1-7)
8th-nov-affilaite-clicks-1024x412
Clicks to top ecommerce sites by time (8th November)
Notice the drop in affiliate clicks post 8 pm on November 8? Post November 8, we have seen a 19-20% drop in traffic redirecting to top ecommerce sites from Pricebaba. This can be directly attributed to the web traffic drop.

If you were wondering which range of products were most impacted, here is the price split. The below table shows % drop in traffic going to ecommerce sites for different price range.
impact-on-affiliate-clicks-pricebaba
It seems that the traffic interest in lower-end products is more impacted than higher end. It would be interesting to see how long it takes for the recovery in consumer demand. Our belief is that we will see good recovery once withdrawal limits from bank accounts are lifted.

Above data is largely for electronics category, mostly mobile phones. Any more insights you want us to look at? Feel free to comment below or tag us on twitter @Pricebaba.

PS: We are very much in favour of this government move and are waiting for figures on how much black money was snipped in this movement!

5 reasons online shopping is better than store visit on Black Friday

Whether you're want to express love by purchasing some presents or you are participating in this traditional buying craziness just to grab a deal on something you've been planning to buy for some time, you should consider online purchasing for these 5 reasons:

1)      Your chances of finding the exact thing you want rise

In 2014, there were around 650,000 online retailers worldwide who were generating sales over $1,000 per year. There are many large companies and one of them, of course, was Amazon. So if you want to find, say, a six-inch replica of The Rock wearing a tutu and holding the briefcase, it's totally not a problem. Buying online gives you a big advantage when you're trying to purchase personalized gifts.

2)      You might curb impulse purchases

According to research, most people use smartphone and tablet more for spontaneous, in-the-moment purchases. But on Black Friday, almost half of mobile devices users (45.4% and 47.4%, respectively) use their smartphones and tablets not just to complete their buys, but to research purchases, as well. So, if you can use online comparisons to tell more clearly what the best deal is for you, you're less likely to go astray by a fear of missing out. Online shopping is awesome because you have the opportunity to buy in peace and quiet, on your terms, without any pressure.

3)      Your mind and body will be less exhausted

Cooking tons of food and/or interacting with family and friends on Thanksgiving takes a lot of your energy. So, if you want to hit a doorbuster, you've got to get up early next day in order to manage to the store at 5 or 6 a.m. Even more, you have to deal with a lot of the physical stress like walking around, fighting crazy crowds and loading/unloading your goods.

At the other hand, online shopping lets you reimburse much better. Apart from your physical health, your wallet will recoup faster, because when you're stressed and very tired, it's much harder for your brain to function normal and makes logical decisions about what you're purchasing.

4)      You up the odds of reaching original buying goals

Many people strike out on Black Friday because they're after specific items the store has advertised. Not only one person wants that particular thing, and in-store retailers offer only a limited number of those items due to limited in terms of floor space. So, if you purchase online and the item you want sells out, you should just try again at another URL. Many online retailers price match, so you don't need to camp out in front of a store.

5)      Online shopping process is faster

It's not just about the time you save by not having to drive around. Online retailers give you the opportunity to complete a checkout with just a few clicks (some even offer one-touch ordering). Also, online retailers can recommend you items based on your previous purchases or browsing history. Even though you probably hate the occasional pop-up ad, you don't have a bunch of products passing around you to distract you.

As for in-store shopping on Black Friday, you shouldn't necessarily entirely disregard it, but shopping online makes a lot of sense financially, mentally and physically. No matter what route you go, remember a little planning and courtesy could help your saving could extend far beyond coupon codes and saving on gas.

Online Shopping Paradigm Shift In The Recent Times !

Online shopping has witnessed a surge in the recent years and the trend has been constantly shifting between different ends of the spectrum. While e-commerce companies have tried to balance the different needs of the consumers, there has been several impediments along the way for each of them. While some have witnessed huge success during particular season, others have faced a few dry seasons.

League of online shopping

The trinity of league of online shopping  giants in our own country (not the justice league or their trinity sorry), Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal  have all responded to the sales of their respective diwali dhamakas. According to indiaretailing.com,

All three say that this year’s sale was the biggest so far and all of them have claimed to achieve a major milestone in some way or the other. As per industry estimates, just one day of festival sales generate anywhere between $300-400 million (about Rs. 2000 – Rs. 3000 crores) in orders for the e-commerce players.

Though the exact numbers of the sales are not yet known, the ballpark among the chatter of the internet is as follows,
  • Flipkart sold around 15.5 million units during their first leg of the “Big Billion Days” sal to an amount of around Rs. 3000 crores. This also includes the sales through their sister websites of Myntra and Jabong where the focus was more on the women category of clothing.
  • Amazon said that it sold 15 million units during its Great Indian Festival.
  • Snapdeal even though has lesser support from the customer side managed to rake up transactions for 11 million units.
These numbers easily signifies the shift of focus of customers from going to shops and buying their needs to sitting in their living rooms and ordering stuff they most probably don’t need.
A research by Ugam – a firm that provides analytics and research on the market trends and many comparisons for shopping engines said that Amazon offered 70% of the most preferred smartphones in their sale of exclusive mobile phones and apparently much far ahead of their rivals.

Another interesting trend in this year’s sale was the participation of small town cities. There is a rise in the sales from Tier II and towns due to the spread of internet and smart phones into these. The ratio of sales between the metro and small towns has risen to 60:40 from 70:30.

While majority of the players were giving out huge discounts during the festival season, there are still large number of players who are into the affiliate industry trying to give the best discounts for the customers. Sites like paylesser india offered Myntra coupons exclusively focused on the women category. Other sites like Cashkaro, offered cashback services for purchases done via their portal. All in all, the festive season was a huge success and now e-commerce and their affiliates are trying to tackle the cash-on-delivery issues that popped up in the wake of Prime Minister’s announcement.

In an unrelated news, Alibaba has beaten its own sales record during the sale for ‘singles’. (This doesn’t have a name yet but it is a kind of discrimination). The company reported that sales has apparently risen to $18 Billion compared to last year’s $14 Billion. They also reported that 82% of the purchases happened over mobile phones. The event had a blast of a start with sales hitting 5 billion dollars in the first hour which includes “lock-in” from pre-ordering. These numbers are quite staggering but us Indians are not too far behind.

Online shopping now the habit for Indonesians

Indonesians’ love for their smartphones has crept into their shopping habits as a recent Google study finds using them for online shopping has become their latest widespread habit, a trend that affects brick-and-mortar stores.

A survey of smartphone owners in Indonesia, who account for 43 percent of the population — 80 million users — showed that up to 57 percent of online shopping in Indonesia is done on mobile phones.

On top of that, 77 percent gathered information on products online through their cell phones prior to visiting the physical or online stores that sell the products, Google’s research finds.

“Mobile phones are the gateway to [physical] stores,” Google wrote in a statement distributed following the release of the research results on Thursday. “What’s fascinating is Indonesians’ love for their smartphones.”

Notable habits that are shown by Indonesian online shoppers include the fact that most tend to research what they want to purchase and evaluate specifications and prices almost 20 to 30 days beforehand. The study says that this is due to the prevalence of smartphones and the increasing internet usage that enables such habits to thrive.

As many as 71 percent of smartphone owners consider their smartphones to be their primary tools for going online, the highest in the Asia-Pacific region. They spend 136 minutes per day on their smartphones, compared to spending only 52 minutes on desktop computers.

However, the industry still faces challenges to properly grow, mainly with the transition of consumers to the online shopping concept, but also the everlasting problem of logistics for the platforms themselves.

Commenting on this trend, Tokopedia CEO William Tanuwijaya said that he had expanded his site’s purchase capabilities, enabling customers to pay for their BPJS health insurance or even pre-pay electric bills on Tokopedia.

He said the focus of his service is to ease transaction barriers, such as by diversifying payment options, which also benefits Tokopedia’s collaborators.

“For example, after we enabled the option to make payments at Indomaret and Alfamart stores, we were told that it brought them a monthly 7 percent sales increase from those who want to pay for their goods. It has become a win-win thing,” William said at Google Indonesia’s office on Thursday.

William said he observed how “first time” online shoppers tend to have the same expectations as when they are shopping offline, which results in a lot of online complaints, making the transition to online shopping for some customers more difficult.

Despite the challenges, Tokopedia managed to sell 20 million products in 2015 and claimed a
Rp 1 trillion (US$75 million) per month growth in transactions since it hit that figure in August this year. Tokopedia’s target is to maintain a 15 percent monthly growth until the end of the year.

The Google study was done to help e-commerce platforms prepare for the busy year-end shopping season, which has been dominated by Lazada, Tokopedia, Bukalapak, Elevania and blibli.com.

During the year-end holiday season last year, blibli.com and Lazada had nine to 10 times more transactions than their average sales as consumers went on a shopping frenzy for products such as beauty and personal care products, gadgets and accessories, clothing and baby equipment.

Cyber Monday Set To Be Largest Shopping Day In History

Cyber Monday (Nov. 28) is the largest shopping day of not only the Thanksgiving weekend, but the year. According to Adobe Digital Insights (ADI), it is expected to be the largest online shopping day in history. The upcoming holiday season will be the largest online shopping affair yet, with expectations of 11% biggest growth year over year (YoY) and $91.6 billion in total holiday online sales.
The History Of Cyber Monday

In 2005, the National Retail Federation coined the term “Cyber Monday” in a press release from its Shop.org unit: “77% of online retailers said that their sales increased substantially on the Monday after Thanksgiving, a trend that is driving serious online discounts and promotions on Cyber Monday.” The reason that the Monday after Thanksgiving saw a spike in online sales rather than the weekend is simple. In 2005, many consumers only had access to high-speed internet at work and would use it to begin their Holiday shopping the first day they were back in the office, after the long Thanksgiving weekend.

Consumers have become more comfortable spending money online, a major positive for Cyber Monday sales. According to ADI, Cyber Monday is expected to hit $3.36 billion in online sales this year, a YoY growth of 9.4%.

The Growth Of Cyber Monday
In a survey from digital marketing firm Fluent, 34% of respondents said they had done some holiday shopping before September this year. Many of those consumers polled will also focus on Cyber Monday this year: 40% will be participating in the online shopping holiday, with 53% planning to spend the same amount as last year and 26% planning to spend less. The poll reveals the importance of retail websites during the 2016 holiday season and their contribution to overall sales.
The graph below shows the dramatic growth in Cyber Monday sales from 2005 through 2015. Sales on Cyber Monday have grown at a 16.8% CAGR over the period, and the rate has been slightly higher in recent years (it was 24.7% in 2010-15).

Is Cyber Monday Still Significant?

Retailers seem to be falling all over themselves competing to see who can announce their holiday deals the earliest. Cyber Monday has become Cyber Week, and November is turning into Cyber Month. With increased access to high-speed internet at home as well as on mobile devices, pent-up demand for shopping the Monday after Thanksgiving ought to be weaker now than it has been in previous years.
But Cyber Monday is as strong as ever, and there appears to be no letup in sight in consumers’ appetite for chasing deals. Data from comScore indicate that, last year, Cyber Monday was a major shopping day—indeed, it was the biggest day—even outpacing the Thanksgiving holiday weekend (12% vs 10% growth YoY).

Cyber Monday’s Convenience Factor
There are many reasons why consumers are more likely to shop online during this holiday season. ADI determined that the top reasons for shopping online include: lower-priced goods, free shipping and product availability. Consumers are looking at convenience factors more than ever this year.

The projected figures for Cyber Monday’s 2016 sales look to be quite exciting, as it is forecast to be the largest online shopping day in history. While consumers are becoming more comfortable shopping online and attracted to Cyber Monday’s convenience, retailers prep themselves for what is sure to be a strong, revenue-generating day.

Rs 500, Rs 1000 crackdown impact: Amazon, Flipkart, Shopclues stop Cash-on-Delivery

If you want to pay for that product that you have purchased an order through Amazon and you plan to opt for Cash on Delivery (COD) option, then you might not be able to do transactions through COD for sometime.

According to the announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi late on Tuesday, the government has banned the use of high value currencies Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 in its bid to control terrorism financing, fake currency circulation and black money generation.

While doing this, the government has said the banks will remain shut today and also warned that some of the ATMs may not function for two days - on 9 November and 10 November.
This has caused a ripple effect with many ecommerce firms deciding not to accept COD.
In compliance with Ministry of Finance’s instructions, delivery associates won’t accept Rs500/1000 from 9thNov.
Flipkart too won’t be accepting any CoDs in the banned denominations. Flipkart said that it would no longer accept CoD payments in Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency note. “In order to enable customers to conserve smaller denomination notes for daily essential use, we are restricting CoD on orders below Rs. 1000. Meanwhile, we urge our customers to opt for alternative payment modes such as card on delivery, internet banking, credit and debit cards, gift cards, and PhonePe wallet. We are also working on a slew of measures to help customers easily transition from cash to digital payments."
Flipkart said that this step by the government was `historic’ as it will enable “India to move faster towards digital payments and will be a game changer for Flipkart and for the ecommerce industry. “

Shopclues, an online market place, has said it will accept CoD upto Rs 999 in government approved denominations, Sanjay Sethi, co-founder and CEO, Shopclues.

“This is a master stroke by the BJP government and a very bold move indeed. Even though it is not the first time such a move has been made by a sitting government, what is significant this time is that it is built on the JAM -Jan Dhan Aadhar and Mobile trinity making it hard for the country to regress,” said Sethi.

Paytm too has temporarily disabled COD offers. Saurabh Vashishtha, Vice President - Paytm said, "Over 98 percent of items are bought through our wallet and other pre-paid payment instruments on our marketplace. Keeping in spirit of the moment we are temporarily disabling COD orders to avoid any inconvenience to our consumers at the time of delivery. We will continue to focus on making payment simpler for our consumers and providing them with a great experience.'

Ankur Bisen, Senior Vice President of the Retail & Consumer Products division at Technopak Advisors, said that COD not being accepted by e-tailers or accepting only in denominations approved by the government is a natural reaction and within the legal framework. Be it online or offline retail, the rules don’t change.

Bisen said that there won’t be any significant impact on e-commerce though. “It is only a temporary arragment. It should be applicable for three to four days only. Once there is liquiditiy in the system then everything will be back to normal,” he said.

Jugnoo, a Chandigarh-based hyper local on-demand, multiservice provider, has also announced that it will stop accepting Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. Samar Singla, CEO and founder said, "However, more than 70 percent of our customers prefer cash payments. Hence, we have started pushing for other mode of payments to deal with the situation on hand.

High demand from smaller cities helps ShopClues register five-fold growth in business during 10-day Diwali sale

Online shopping marketplace ShopClues has registered a five-fold growth in its business on account of the overwhelming response it received from across the country during its 10-day Diwali Sale that went on from October 1 to October 10.

“The Diwali Sale has received positive consumer feedback with 50% increase in demands from Tier II and Tier III markets as compared to Tier I,” a statement issued by the company said today.
“ShopClues also reported a massive five-fold growth in business within the first two days of the Diwali Sale,” the statement added.

During the 10-day ShopClues Diwali Sale, the average time spent per user on the platform also increased by about 25 per cent.

The highest growth in brand searches have come from Agartala, Guwahati, and Imphal, the company said.
“ShopClues is witnessing a significant growth in demand across various geographies. The amount of consumer engagement that has been generated during this festive season has surpassed our expectations and preliminary projections of the festive activity,” Radhika Aggarwal, co-founder, and CBO, Shopclues.com said.×
The platform has witnessed a ten-fold increase in the television as well as feature phone segment on the website. The sales figure of 4G smartphones below Rs 5,000, 32-inch LED TVs below Rs 10,000, and appliance sales have collectively increased five times on the platform.
Computers and camera category recorded a quadruple increase in overall figures, whereas home and footwear category grew by more than three times the initial figure.

Shopclues to target flea market shoppers

On Tuesday, the company said it was launching the next series of sales, including an eight-day 'flea market sale'

Shopclues, commonly known as an unstructured category marketplace player, which just concluded its 10-day festive sale, wants to have a go at it again. On Tuesday, the company said it was launching the next series of sales, including an eight-day “flea market sale”.

It will also hold its second edition of ‘Diwali festive mega sale’ from October 17.

Buoyed by overall growth, the company believes by the middle of next year it would achieve earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (Ebitda) profitability.

Including its previous round, the company hopes to ship in 400,000 orders in total after the completion of its flea market discount sale. The company claimed it reached out to 30,000 pin codes, including 12,000 in rural India.

Radhika Aggarwal, co-founder and CBO of Shopclues.com, told Business Standard that the company was now the top player in tier-II, tier-III and rest of India markets and had emerged a clear winner following the festive sale.

“In India, it takes at least four to five Diwali sales to establish yourself. We can confidently say that we are the clear winner in tier-II, tier-III and rest of India. We are the dominant player in these regions,'' Aggarwal said. In the first 10 days, sales were ''extremely profitable for the company,'' she said. The reason, she said, was price led and not discount led. Also, the firm spent less than five per cent of the total industry outlay on marketing and branding, according to Aggarwal.

The big three online players – Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal – have indicated they are going to organise more sales through the festive season. Amazon India will have a three-day sale starting October 17, Snapdeal from October 12 to 14. Flipkart, too, has similar plans.

As for Shopclues, the highest growth in brand searches came from the northeast. Also, during Diwali, spiritual items are one of the biggest order drivers on Shopclues. The platform has also witnessed a ten-fold increase in television as well as feature phone segments on its website. Sales of 4G smartphones priced below Rs 5,000, 32-inch LED TV priced below Rs 10,000, and appliances have collectively increased five times on the platform.

iVoler Type C Power Bank 10000 review: A sleek and portable pack for quick trips

A battery pack you can easily slip into a purse or backpack and not have to worry about extra bulk.

If you're looking for a smaller, less expensive battery pack, consider the iVoler 10,000mAh USB Type C Power Bank ($30 on Amazon).
Designed with portability in mind, it’s easy to put in a backpack or even slip into a pocket (for short periods of time). A power button sits just above four indicator lights. On the front of the pack are two ports: one USB-C and USB-A.
The USB-C port provides quick charge capabilities on the Pixel XL. The USB-A port offers the same, but stops short of bringing Quick Charge 3.0 to the LG G5.
Recharging the pack is done through the USB-C port, with the total time to charge its 10,000 mAh (36Wh) battery coming in just over three hours.
As far as an efficiency rating goes, the iVoler performed very well in our testing, at 91.67%. In other words, we were able to get 33Wh out of a possible 36Wh from the device.
Granted, this isn’t the biggest battery available, but it’s more than enough to recharge a smartphones few times during the day or on an overnight trip in the airport.
When you combine overall size with its overall efficiency, the iVoler Type C Power Bank is the best portable battery pack we tested.
Included in the box is a USB-C to USB-C cable, and a USB-A to USB-C cable.
